What Happened to STEPN: The Rise and Fall of Move-to-Earn's Biggest App
So, what happened to STEPN? Is STEPN dead? No, it didn't die. It deflated, then it deflated a second time, which is honestly the worse story.
For a few months in 2022, walking around your neighbourhood in a pair of NFT sneakers was one of the loudest trades in crypto. Then the whole thing folded in under two months. And the part almost nobody covers is what came next: the studio rebuilt the game, relaunched it, and watched the new token do roughly the same thing.
The rise: 1,500 walkers to a $2.3 billion token
STEPN went into beta in December 2021 on Solana. The pitch was almost stupidly simple. Buy an NFT sneaker, go for a walk, get paid.
It worked fast. STEPN grew from roughly 1,500 daily active users in January 2022 to more than 400,000 by that April, according to Naavik's retrospective analysis. Peak daily users are genuinely disputed, reported anywhere from about 104,000 to 800,000 depending on the source and the measurement window, so treat any single figure as one outlet's read.
What nobody argues about: GMT, the premium token, reached a market cap of roughly $2.3 billion on April 19, 2022. Naavik put Q2 2022 protocol profit at an estimated $123 million.
Co-founder Jerry Huang told TechCrunch in May 2022 that the whole point was onboarding normies: "Many people might have used centralized exchanges like Binance and Coinbase to trade, but few know what a DEX is, nor have they traded NFTs on a marketplace or owned a self-custodial wallet."
That was the sell. Crypto's mainstream on-ramp, wearing running shoes.
Two tokens, one treadmill
Here's the machine in plain English.
You bought a sneaker NFT. Walking with the app open burned energy and paid out GST, the reward token, which had unlimited supply. GMT was the other one, capped at 6 billion and used for premium minting and higher-level upgrades (Gemini's explainer covers the mechanics in more depth). Repairs, levelling and minting all burned tokens back out of circulation. Those burns were the sinks.
So the whole economy balanced on one thing. New GST got printed every time anybody walked, forever, with no ceiling. The sinks only kept pace while new players kept showing up to buy sneakers and level them. Slow the intake and you get more tokens chasing less demand, every day, compounding.
Naavik didn't hedge about it. They called the model "formulaically ponzinomic, where the inflow of new players is required to fund the ROI of older players, and the system crashes when the speed of new players joining decelerates."
The STEPN crash: China first, then the math
The visible trigger was regulatory. On May 27, 2022, STEPN announced it would cut off GPS services for mainland China users effective July 15, 2022, citing regulatory policy. Bitcoinist reported GMT dropping nearly 40% and GST over 26% within days of the announcement.
Now the strange part. Mainland China was under 5% of STEPN's user base at the time. A sub-5% market exit knocked 40% off the token in a week, which tells you the market wasn't pricing users. It was pricing belief.
The rest played out over about ten weeks. GST's market cap went from $140 million on May 21, 2022 to $24 million by June 30. GMT fell from that $2.3 billion April peak to roughly $480 million across the same stretch, near 80% gone.
Sneaker floor price, the actual cost of entry, dropped from $1,571 in late April 2022 to $88 by the end of June, per Naavik's numbers. That's a 94% haircut on the asset people had bought specifically to earn with.
BanklessTimes tracked GST down more than 99% for the year by the close of 2022, with a fresh all-time low hit on New Year's Day 2023.
STEPN GO: the reboot that ran the same movie
Most collapsed GameFi projects just go quiet. FSL, STEPN's studio, actually rebuilt.
STEPN GO went into beta around August and September 2024 with a fresh token, GGT, plus social and lending mechanics the original never had. The marketing leaned hard on mainstream names: a Genesis NFT sneaker collaboration with Adidas on Solana announced in September 2024, and a Snoop Dogg collection the following month.
BTCC's price history puts GGT at roughly $10 shortly after its September 2024 launch, sliding to about $0.17 by April 25, 2025. A fall of over 98% in around seven months. Same magnitude as the original GST crash. Faster.
Meanwhile the legacy app kept shrinking. GMT earnings were cut another 50% effective January 1, 2026, and 24-hour GMT trading volume sat at roughly $5 million by April 2026, down from about $360 million at the 2022 peak, according to Bitletics' 2026 move-to-earn review.
Two apps, two tokens, one identical outcome. I'd argue that's the real finding here, and it's the beat most coverage of this story skips: swapping the token didn't change the physics.
What STEPN should teach you about the next one
None of this was unforeseeable. Ché Köhler of Niche Market described exactly this mechanism about Axie Infinity in Forkast, back in November 2021, months before STEPN's token peaked: the model works while new joiners outnumber existing ones, and breaks into "more tokens hitting less demand" once growth stalls. To be fair, insiders disagreed at the time. Sky Mavis co-founder Aleksander Larsen argued in that same piece that "economic value is being created through growth" and that the system would find equilibrium. It didn't.
And STEPN wasn't unlucky, it was typical. A Caladan report covered by CoinDesk in April 2026 found more than 90% of the sector's 2021 and 2022-era projects had effectively failed by 2026, with token prices down roughly 95% from peak on average. We've covered that wider collapse elsewhere on DegenLoot, along with how to read a game's tokenomics before you buy in. STEPN is just the cleanest single specimen of the pattern. That's what happened to STEPN, twice, and it's the pattern worth checking before the next move-to-earn launch.
So the question worth asking about any crypto game now probably isn't how much you can earn. It's what you can actually check. Stellarch, the browser TCG we cover here, is built around that second question: combat resolves through a seeded-RNG engine, so every match replays byte-identically from its seed and you can verify a result yourself instead of taking an operator's word for it. Free to start, no card purchase and no wallet needed for a first match, running in the browser on Hive. It's also in closed alpha with a waitlist, and there's no earning story to pitch you, because that part isn't switched on. Smaller promise. Checkable one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is STEPN dead in 2026?
No, but it's a fraction of what it was. The original app still operates and STEPN GO is still live. The economy is what collapsed: 24-hour GMT trading volume was around $5 million by April 2026 against roughly $360 million at the 2022 peak, and GMT rewards were cut another 50% on January 1, 2026. Diminished, not shut down. If you're asking the same question about a different game, here's how to tell whether a crypto game is actually dying.
Why did STEPN's GST and GMT tokens crash?
GST had unlimited supply and got minted every time anyone walked, while the sinks (repairs, minting, levelling) only kept pace as long as new players kept arriving. Once growth slowed in mid-2022, issuance outran demand. GST's market cap fell from $140 million on May 21, 2022 to $24 million by June 30, and closed the year down more than 99%.
What is STEPN GO, and is it different from STEPN?
STEPN GO is a separate app from the same studio, FSL, launched in beta around August and September 2024 with a new token called GGT plus social and lending features. Mechanically it's a reboot rather than a patch. Its token still fell from roughly $10 at launch to about $0.17 by April 25, 2025, over 98% in seven months.
Is STEPN worth it now?
Depends entirely on why you'd install it. As a fitness tracker with a crypto layer it still functions and still ships updates. As an earning play, the numbers make the case badly: rewards halved on January 1, 2026, and the sneaker floor fell 94% between April and June 2022. Nobody should size a position on 2022 screenshots.
