SAND Coin Bridge Exploit: The $49 Billion Phantom Mint, and Who Gets Paid

SAND Coin Bridge Exploit: The $49 Billion Phantom Mint, and Who Gets Paid

Three numbers keep getting mashed together in SAND coin coverage, and they measure completely different things. If you only read the headline, you'd think The Sandbox got rugged for $49 billion. It didn't. Here's the actual math.

On August 21-22, 2026, an attacker minted 329.24 trillion unbacked SAND across 703 transactions into 173 wallets over roughly five hours, according to Blockaid's count as reported by crypto.news. Crypto.news put a price tag on that pile: about $49 billion, all on paper.

Blockaid's post-mortem, as crypto.news reported in August 2026, put the real haul at about $675,000: roughly 14.75 million genuine SAND pulled from the Ethereum-side OFT Adapter in under 60 seconds and swapped for around 80 ETH.

So no, nobody lost $49 billion. Welcome to phantom-mint math.

Why do the SAND numbers disagree?

PeckShield and Blockaid don't contradict each other. One's a mid-attack photo, the other's the post-mortem. Read them as the same crime scene at two different timestamps, not a discrepancy. As CryptoMeter put it: "Multiplying a legitimate market price by an enormous quantity of newly minted tokens does not mean that amount of liquidity exists." And the ~$697,000 in CryptoTimes' August 27, 2026 report is probably the same drain priced at a different ETH moment.

For scale, the Ronin bridge hack in March 2022 cost $624 million in real funds, CryptoMeter noted. SAND's headline dwarfs that number, sure. But real damage-wise? This barely registers. Call it a rounding error and move on.

How did someone mint 329 trillion SAND?

The SAND coin crosses chains as a LayerZero omnichain fungible token (OFT), minting and burning instead of wrapping. The attacker abused approveAndCall on Base to hijack the contract's LayerZero delegate permissions, then minted with nothing locked behind them on Base and BNB Smart Chain, as Blockaid's alert laid out via crypto.news.

Those tokens were junk the second they existed, full stop. The only real value in reach was genuine SAND sitting in the Ethereum adapter, and that's what got drained.

(Side note that bugs me: crypto.news counts this as the third major LayerZero-related bridge incident in five months of 2026. Not proof LayerZero's core protocol is broken, but it's a pattern.)

3

Is SAND coin on Ethereum safe?

The Sandbox says yes. It told The Defiant it disabled bridging on Base and BNB Smart Chain and isolated the fake tokens. No user wallets were compromised, and SAND locked on Ethereum was never touched. If you're holding SAND coin on Ethereum, you can stop refreshing your wallet. This one never touched you. It's worth knowing The Sandbox's virtual-land history before deciding how much that reassurance is worth, though.

Exchanges flinched anyway. Upbit and Bithumb put SAND under trading caution on August 22, 2026, with Upbit's review running into the fifth week of September. We haven't seen the outcome reported yet.

4

Who gets paid in the SAND coin compensation plan?

Eligible holders of bridged SAND on Base and BNB Chain, affected liquidity providers included. The Sandbox announced a 1:1 compensation plan on August 27, 2026, built on a pre-attack snapshot and paid from treasury rather than new mints, which keeps circulating supply at 3 billion.

That same CryptoTimes report adds a detail worth flagging: exchanges holding over 72% of affected balances distribute replacements directly. Everyone else claims through a portal slated to open within two weeks of the announcement.

Holding SAND coin on Ethereum? Nothing to claim, you were never in the blast radius. The stolen ETH is another story; none of the coverage we sourced reports it coming back.

Honestly, the takeaway from the SAND coin bridge exploit for anyone sizing up other web3 games' bridges probably isn't the headline number. It's how much real value sits in the vault a bridge can reach. We'll update this post as claims roll out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the $49 billion Sandbox hack real money, or just a headline number?

Headline number, not a loss. Blockaid's August 2026 figure multiplies 329.24 trillion unbacked SAND by SAND's market price, and those tokens had no backing and no market to sell into. That $49 billion never existed.

How much money did the attacker actually steal?

About $675,000, full stop. Crypto.news reported it in August 2026: roughly 14.75 million genuine SAND drained from the Ethereum-side adapter in under 60 seconds and swapped for about 80 ETH.

Why do different articles report different numbers?

Different snapshots, same event. PeckShield's 14.9 billion SAND came from an early alert on August 21, 2026, mid-attack. Blockaid's 329.24 trillion covers the full five-hour window. $49 billion is face value; $675,000 is the real take.

Are SAND tokens held on Ethereum safe after the exploit?

Yes. The Sandbox told The Defiant as much in its August 2026 statement: the exploit stayed on the Base and BNB Smart Chain bridges, and Ethereum-locked SAND and user wallets were never touched.

Did The Sandbox compensate affected users?

It did. The Sandbox announced a plan on August 27, 2026, per CryptoTimes: eligible Base and BNB Chain SAND holders get repaid 1:1 from treasury, based on a pre-attack snapshot, through exchanges or a claims portal.
