HiveFest XI Barcelona: What Hive Gamers Should Actually Expect

Three unrelated things share this name, and if you're googling HiveFest XI Barcelona, the search results mix all of them together. Honestly, let's kill that confusion early.

This is not HIVE Digital Technologies, the Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin mining and data-center company. Different business, different chain, zero connection. It's also not the German open-air techno festival at Ferropolis, which is genuinely a great time and has nothing to do with any of this.

The Hive we mean is the layer-1 chain Splinterlands runs on. It exists because the Steem community hard-forked away from a hostile takeover in March 2020 to keep the chain community-owned. The event was called SteemFest before that. Same gathering, new name.

If you play Splinterlands, HiveFest isn't abstract. At HiveFest 2024 in Split, Croatia, the studio handed out a free, tradeable Epic in-game title called The Emissary, carrying a 25% land-production boost. You claimed it by logging in with your Hive wallet. No gameplay needed.

That's the pattern. Not a booth blitz, not a comms-team partnership announcement. Small community rewards, and a lot of people who already know each other in one room.

I'd expect something in that shape again this year. Nothing is announced yet though, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

Most coverage either hypes this or says nothing at all about size, so here are the only hard numbers worth having.

HiveFest XI is deliberately stacked right after the European Blockchain Convention, which runs September 16 to 17 in Barcelona. Per Cryptonomist's coverage, that convention alone expects 5,000-plus attendees from 90-plus countries.

HiveFest is nowhere near that, and nobody involved claims it is. The co-located ChainCulture day drew 350-plus people in its first year, by the organizer's own count. Small, I'd guess, on purpose. Hundreds, not thousands.

It's funded by community vote rather than a sponsor budget. Organizer Roeland Peelen put the whole thing to Hive stakeholders in an open go or no-go post, asking for roughly 45,000 HBD from the Decentralized Hive Fund, and wrote: "I will only move forward if there is a genuine yes here."

Honestly? That one line tells you more than any agenda would. A volunteer-run gathering that has happened every year since 2016, across Amsterdam, Lisbon, Kraków, Bangkok, Mexico, Croatia, and Kuala Lumpur. Call it what it actually is: a small, community-run web3 gaming conference, not a mega-con. Both things can be true at once.
